NATIONAL
AWARDS FOR QUALITY SCHOOLING
3 November, 2003
Tonight I am pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural
2003 National Awards for Quality Schooling (NAQS) which offer a prize pool of
almost $1 million.
The 16 winning schools each receive $24,000 and the 17 winning teachers and
school leaders each receive $12,000 for outstanding achievements. An extra 51
schools will receive $8,000 each for highly commended achievements.
Our children’s future rests largely in the hands of our schools, teachers and
school leaders and these awards celebrate their outstanding work on behalf of
their students.
Winners underwent a rigorous assessment process with judges looking for
demonstrated success in the priority areas of literacy and numeracy, safe school
environments, school leadership, values education, or innovation in science,
mathematics and technology.
The inaugural Awards are linked to the Australian Government’s $1.2 million
National Quality Schooling Framework (NQSF) – a web-based education resource
offering schools proven approaches to getting the best out of students.
The achievements of the winning schools, teachers and school leaders show how
innovative and evidence-based practice can make a genuine difference to our
children’s development and well-being.
I congratulate all of the 2003 National Awards for Quality Schooling winners and
thank them for making a difference to the lives of their students.
